Founded in 2004, Bruin Supermileage is a student-run organization that designs, builds, and races highly energy-efficient vehicles.

We compete in the collegiate Shell Eco-Marathon Americas event each year against teams from throughout the Western Hemisphere. Through this experience, our team members learn real-world engineering and leadership skills while encouraging environmental sustainability.

The nature of the project necessitates an interdisciplinary team composition, including mechanical, electrical, materials science, and computer science engineers, among others. Our goal is to create a culture of growth, community, and commitment all while staying safe and having fun along the way.

As a new member, onboarding is an important multi-step process that allows you to get a more in-depth understanding of what we do as well as providing you with the necessary information needed to be successful and safe.

Step 3: Complete Mandatory Shop Safety Trainings

Safety is paramount in Supermileage, and nothing is worth getting hurt for. Completing the shop safety trainings is only the first step in creating a safe environment in the shop. Maintaining safe practices is a daily task and should be on your mind constantly. Below are a few important not exhaustive things to keep in mind while in the Bruin Racing shop.

1. Wear proper attire while in the shop and the appropriate PPE(personal protective equipment) while working on specific tasks. If unclear what PPE is required for the job at hand, ask someone!
2. Make sure you are confident and comfortable with any and all tools that you handle. If not, don’t be a hero. Ask someone to train/teach you. No one will blame you for not knowing how something works, we’ve all had to learn at some point. The worst case scenario is getting hurt when it could’ve been prevented because you didn’t know how to use something.
3. Design for safety in mind.
4. If you see someone doing something obviously wrong, let them know! If you see anything that is a safety hazard, assess the situation, clean it up if possible and report it to a lead or admin. If it’s something that is happening frequently, bring it up to an admin member, and we will update guidelines, make note of it during GM, and enforce a change in overall behavior.

UCLA Engineering has required all members of student organizations to complete four Environment, Health, and Safety online training, to include:

• Fire & life-saving online training (FIRE-FEX-OL),
• Shop Safety online training,
• Lab Safety Fundamentals, and
• General Chemical Safety training (IP-HCOMM-OL)

The student organization-community needs to work together to ensure no one gets hurt and protect our campus-environment.  The required training are a starting-point to help you think about student organization activities, what you might implement to keep yourself safe, reduce any hazards in your organization’s activities and/or potential impact to our campus.  These training need to be completed annually by all student organization members.  Members that do not complete this training will NOT have access to student organization rooms in the School of Engineering.  If a refresher is offered, you can complete the refresher.  Keep in mind that you need to complete this training to have access to student organization rooms.

The following provides instructions on what to do:

• Log into Worksafe (https://worksafe.ucla.edu) – if you have never signed-in to Worksafe you will need to do so using your Bruin Online log-in.
• Click on ‘My Learning Tracks’ or ‘My Assignments’.
• Click on the green plus sign – which will open another window (make sure your pop-up blocker for this site is turned off).
• In the ‘Catalog ID drop down menu’, select Engineering Student Organization Safety Trainings.
• Click ‘Next’ after the selection – the system will assign the Learning Track to your account.
• You will have 30 days to complete the trainings.

You can also access the Learning Track Enrollment handout that provides images along with the instructions.

Please enroll in the Engineering Student Organizations Safety trainings Learning Track instead of enrolling in each training independently.  Your completion of the training and passing the quiz will be provided in a report to the School of Engineering.  You will NOT need to print your certificate of completion and submit it to us if you enroll in the Learning Track.
